(Feb 24, 2011)-- The folks at FLW Outdoors opened their facility and showed some much welcomed hospitality to a troop of National Guard soldiers from Walton Kentucky. The group is set to deploy soon and will be a part of the largest National Guard Mobilization in Kentucky’s history. They’ve been training vigorously, but were able to take advantage of this small window of opportunity to unwind and relax - - even if just for the day. Eighty-eight men and women from the 940th Military Police Unit arrived by bus at 10 a.m. this morning where they were treated to a tour of FLW’s headquarters, outdoor entertainment including a rock wall, simulators and games, as well as lunch and gift bags filled with assorted items. (photo submitted by FLW Outdoors)"] Dave Washburn, Director of Administrative Operations for FLW said it was “fate" that led to the event actually coming about. And it was that same "fate" that led National Guard Captain Curtis Persinger to pursue bridging his passion for serving his country with his desire to become a member of the National Guard’s FLW fishing team in the first place. Cpt. Persinger recalls the day he received word he had been offered a spot on the team. “I said ‘someone needs to pinch me, this has to be a dream,’” he said of his ability to represent both the National Guard and FLW, two passions he says have now come together to become a perfect fit. “It’s an honor for me to represent them both.” After learning he had earned his spot on the team, Capt. Persinger came through Benton’s headquarters where he told Kathy Fennel, President of Operations Division, that he would like to bring a few of his guys out to see the facility. Fennel thought good of the idea too, telling Persinger to bring more than just a few-- he invited the whole company. Washburn said while FLW has worked with numerous school groups, providing tours of the facility, this was their first opportunity to open their doors to the troops. Of the days' success Washburn said, “I can’t imagine this would be the last." He added that he would like to see this become an annual event. Washburn admits that while the National Guard is a sponsor of FLW, they are so much more. "What they do for our country is immeasurable. While this may be fun for them, it is truly an honor for us.”
