RICHMOND, Ky. –
Kentucky’s 149th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade held a change of responsibility ceremony in Richmond, Sept. 11, 2026. The event marked the transition between senior enlisted leaders, during which U.S. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Aaron Lester relinquished responsibility to Command Sgt. Maj. Bryan Jefferson.
Col. Terry Durham, commander of the 149th MEB, presided over the ceremony and recognized Lester for three years of service as the brigade’s senior enlisted leader while welcoming Jefferson as the brigade’s new command sergeant major.
“A change of responsibility isn’t just about the ceremony,” Durham said. “It’s about the mission, the people who carry it out, and the trust that binds us.”
The ceremony symbolizes the transfer of responsibility and authority from one senior enlisted leader to another, with the brigade colors serving as a tangible representation of the organization’s history, traditions and accomplishments.
Reflecting on his tenure, Lester emphasized the duty leaders must have to leave their units prepared for the future.
“Our responsibility is simple — make sure the organization is better before passing it on to the next generation of Soldiers,” Lester said. “During my time here at the brigade as a command sergeant major, this formation continued adding its own chapter to the history of the brigade.”
Looking toward the future of the force, he stressed the critical role of mentoring junior personnel.
“If we want better formations, we must develop competent leaders at the lowest level,” Lester said.
Durham praised Lester’s leadership, candor and commitment to the brigade’s Soldiers.
“There’s nothing more valuable than a senior enlisted leader who tells it like it is, has our Soldiers’ backs and leads from the front,” Durham said.
As he prepared to sign off, the outgoing sergeant major credited the unit's progress to a collective effort rather than personal accolades.
“I leave this brigade with tremendous pride, not for what I have accomplished, but for what we accomplished together,” Lester said.
Addressing the brigade for the first time as command sergeant major, Jefferson emphasized his commitment to the organization’s success.
“I promise you, without a doubt, no one will work harder to ensure the success of this brigade,” Jefferson said. “To the Soldiers of the 149th MEB, I look forward to meeting and training with you.”
Jefferson concluded his remarks by referencing Joshua 1:9, encouraging Soldiers to remain strong and courageous as he begins his tenure with the brigade.
Lester departs the Kentucky National Guard to serve as the senior enlisted advisor to the Indiana National Guard’s 38th Infantry Division.
