Family members who've lost loved ones in military service to the United States stand in the winner’s circle with a trophy for the victor of the 5th race at Churchill Downs Racetrack in Louisville, Ky., Nov. 5, 2023. The 5 1/2-furlong maiden contest, named the Race for Survivors of the Fallen Military Heroes, was won by Halina’s Forte, a 2-year-old filly, with jockey Martin Garcia aboard. Kentucky Honor Guard helps put to rest forgotten Medal of Honor recipient

Rowalt had served during the American Indian War before contracting smallpox and dying around the age of 28 in Cincinnati and buried at the nearby Kentucky cemetery. His grave site was previously unmarked for the last 148 years.
