Kentucky women’s basketball honors female service members

By Capt. Kaitlin Baudendistel, 133rd Mobile Public Affairs Detachment

Female service members were celebrated by the University of Kentucky women’s basketball team during their Heroes Day and Salute to Veterans game on Nov. 12, 2024.

Among those honored were U.S. Army Col. Brandye Williams, commander of the 149th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, and U.S. Army Maj. Eileen Miller, plans officer for the 149th.

Both Soldiers have achieved “female first” titles within the Kentucky Army National Guard. Williams was the first woman to command the 103rd Chemical Support Battalion and now leads the 149th. Miller also made history as the first female infantry company commander.

Williams and Miller expressed the significance of this recognition.

“Participating in this event is an amazing opportunity,” said Williams. “It highlights the importance of our contributions to the armed services.”

Miller reflected on the impact of being a “female first.”

“It was an honor to be recognized as the first, but hopefully not the last,” said Miller. “It’s a privilege to showcase what female service members are accomplishing and how we contribute to the Guard, even while representing only a fraction of the many achievements by women Soldiers.”

The Kentucky Wildcats women’s basketball team will continue to honor service members at each home game throughout November.
